Since 2013, attorney Phillip Steck has been a member of the New York State Assembly. In his Assembly position, Phillip Steck works to help people in his district, and recently secured thousands of dollars in funding for the YWCA of Schenectady.

Thanks to the $12,500 in additional funding, the YWCA of Schenectady will be able to better support victims of domestic violence and their family members. This YWCA houses Schenectady County’s only licensed domestic violence shelter, and operates a 24-hour hotline for victims of domestic violence. Whether victims need assistance with navigating the court system or Child Protective Services, additional counseling, or assistance during the holidays, these funds can get them the help they need.

This money will also help support the YWCA Economic Solutions (YES) Program, which supports victims of domestic violence and women who have been homeless as they rebuild their lives. The YES Program provides life skills counseling and assistance with stress management. It also offers employment exploration opportunities, enabling participants to better equip themselves for the next stage of their lives.

Prior to being elected Member of the New York State Assembly from the 110th District, Phillip Steck served on the board of the Shaker Heritage Society of Albany, New York.which is located in the Town of Colonie within the 110th District. The site is a national historic landmark.

The Shaker Heritage Society is harged with the task of demonstrating the influence of this religious group on American history. The society provides hands-on programs illustrating the Shaker way of life.

For example, participants in these programs can learn about the Shakers’ use of textiles. Although their apparel is associated with simple designs, they also made more sophisticated fabrics and accessories, displayed in reproductions and images.

Shakers also harvested plants and herbs, becoming well-known for their medicines, dyes, and spices. Visitors can sample fragrant herbs and grind them in a mortar and pestle to create sachets.

The Shaker culture lives on in its food. Participants in these programs can dine on complete meals prepared from Shaker recipes.

The society presents lectures on many aspects of Shaker life, ranging from their views on racial and gender equality to the community’s sometimes-broken rules.
